Ingredients

  • 1 refrigerated pie crust (9 inches)
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 3 large onions, thinly sliced
  • 1 teaspoon granulated sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 cup shredded Gruyere cheese
  • 3/4 cup heavy cream
  • 3 large eggs
  • 1/4 teaspoon dried thyme

Special note: You can make your own pie crust from scratch if you prefer.

Cooking Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Place the refrigerated pie crust in a 9-inch tart pan and press it firmly against the bottom and sides. Trim any excess crust.
  2. In a large skillet, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the thinly sliced onions and cook, stirring occasionally, for about 15 minutes or until the onions are soft and golden brown.
  3. Sprinkle the sugar, salt, and black pepper over the caramelized onions and continue cooking for another 5 minutes. Remove from heat and let it cool slightly.
  4. Spread the caramelized onions evenly over the bottom of the tart crust. Sprinkle the shredded Gruyere cheese on top.
  5. In a separate bowl, whisk together the heavy cream, eggs, and dried thyme. Pour the mixture over the onions and cheese in the tart crust.
  6. Carefully transfer the tart to the preheated oven and bake for 35-40 minutes or until the filling is set and the crust is golden brown.
  7. Remove from the oven and let it cool for a few minutes before slicing and serving.
